It’s important to have your pets spayed (Female) or neutered (male) if you’re not planning to breed them. Male dogs can smell a female in heat up to a mile away. This is due to pheromones released by the female during her heat cycle which strongly attract intact male dogs. When a male dog smells a female in heat, he may exhibit behaviors like restlessness, excessive urination, attempting to escape, and actively searching for the female. It’s always a good idea to neuter a male dog that you don’t plan to stud and have just as a pet. They are much more sweet, calm and don’t misbehave or mark their territory by peeing on things. This is a natural thing for male animals to do and it only stops if they no longer have the instinct to “sign their name” to their “stuff”.
I once had an all white bulldog stud named Romeo who peed on my foot to claim me all the time. When I asked a trainer how to get him to stop doing this she told me that dog must LOVE you!! He’s writing his name on you all the time. I had to laugh because as a human we don’t think along those lines. Animals do! When you think about it, it makes perfect sense to them. Whatever smells like them is theirs. When you take away the instinct to do this name writing it stops the behavior you don’t want to see or smell. Ruger my other intact male would pee on his toys constantly. Soon as he was neutered all that stopped too.
Females go into heat about every six months. When I was breeding my girls I found someone who makes custom cute underpants for the girls to wear. Her name is Darlene Martinez. Her store is called Nuthin Butt Britches. These little underpants she makes for female bulldogs are the cutest things!!! They are custom fit and she will have you measure your bulldog and send her the measurements. She has suspenders that hold them into place and they use a large overnight period pad that sticks on the inside and my girls didn’t mind wearing them at all. There is a flap over the backside that makes them look like a little skirt with a ruffle on the bum. Adorable! She does custom fabrics and holiday dresses for little girls. She can help little boys and girls with conditions like spina bifida where they need to wear diapers too.
